Siddeley were one of many manufacturers of the R.A.F. R.E.8 and had heard that the upper wing on this machine had failed on a number of occasions. Taking the initiative they redesigned the wing and improved the location of the gunner and his gun and replaced the engine on two of the three prototypes with the Hispano-Suiza unit. Whilst the plane was an improvement over the earlier type the war was coming to an end and no foreseeable future was found for the R.T.1.
