Dornier's proposal to fulfill the Luftwaffe's "Bomber-B" requirement. This was dropped in favor of the aircraft the Luftwaffe Air Staff preferred, the Junkers Ju-288, which in turn proved to be an expensive failure, and never entered production either.

First designed as a high altitude Do217 the plane was discarded in favour of the Fw191 and the Ju288. It was resurrected as a potential successor to the 217 in 1941. Two models were planned the 'A'with two DB603A engines and conventional armament and the more advanced 'B'with two DB610 engines, remote controlled armament, and an extended wing. Six 317A were ordered but the first model,V1, showed little improvement in performance over the existing Do217P. It was decided that the 5 remaining prototypes would be completed, without the intended cockpit pressurisation, as the Do217R. The 'B'model had reached mock up stage but the Technishe Amt decided that it showed little promise and cancelled the project.
The five (not six) Do317R were fitted with the Hs293A missile and flew with III /KG100 from Orleans /Bricy.
