Entering service early in 1916, this was the first biplane fighter adopted by the German Air Service during WW-I. Up until that time German fighter pilots had been flying Fokker "Eindekker" monoplanes. Although only about 5 mph faster, the Halberstadt could climb twice as fast and, with its' sturdier biplane structure and ailerons in place of wing warping for lateral control, it was more maneuverable as well. However, by the summer of 1916, it was clear to the Germans that the new Albatros fighter was even better.
