Ilyushin IL-76

Designed as a heavy transport for use in the Siberian regions of the Soviet Union, the llyushin Il-76, codenamed 'Candid' by NATO, is a large-capacity turbo-fan-powered jet freighter designed to operate from short, unprepared airstrips. The prototype flew on 25 March 1971 and test flying continued until 1975 when the type was put into production at the Tashkent factory. During the same year the II-76 established 25 international records for speed and altitude with payload.

The production II-76T 'Candid A', with greater cargo capacity and higher gross weights, went into service with Aeroflot on domestic routes early in 1978, and the Moscow-Japan international route in April the same year. Around 50 are estimated to be in service with Aeroflot and about 100 have been exported to civil users including Libyan Arab Airlines, Syrianair and, more recently, Cubana, while military customers include the Czech, Polish, Algerian, Iraqi and Indian air forces, this last operating the type as the Gajaraj. The military transport version, intended for the deployment of paratroops and troops, together with strategic heavy freighting, differs primarily by having military, rather than civil, avionics and equipment. The Soviet air force, with about 450 'Candids' in service, also use the aircraft for firefighting (the II-76DMP), able to carry over 40 tons of water or retardant; as an engine testbed (the II-76LL) for flight refuelling (as the Il-78 'Midas'); airborne early warning (as the A-50 'Mainstay' in the USSR, and the 'Adnan' in Iraq) and for Antarctic support flights and cosmonaut training providing simulated weightlessness . By early 1991 total production had reached about 680 aircraft.

We have requirement of spares, repair, overhaul, inspection & checks etc of IL-78 aircraft and its engine in Pakistan. Can anyone tell me good sources for these works and spares? Thanks.

@ A. Daroca-Cheesman "The C-17 Globemaster III flew for the fist time 20 years later. Who copied whom?" Yes, but the IL-76 shares much of the same configuration as the C-141 Starlifter of the same development time. Probably because of the similar mission of the three planes a high wing with a tall vertical stabilizer with a "t" mounted horizontal stabilizer is the best configuration for performance.

I am looking for specs for the distance between the landing gear. The two main and front. I need to calculate the ground pressure for a fully loaded A/C. Does anyone have a technical drawing of the A/C. Henrik

The maximum landing weigh is 151,500 kg (333,700 lbs) for civilian operation (IL-76TD). This value is higher for military operation, also for IL-76TD90 and 76TDF. This A/C is designed to perform tough military specifications: in trials prototypes landed at full load, but that is exceptional.

The Service life is 30 years for modern aircrafts, 10000 flights and 30000 hours (I don’t know the extended life programs details, but it increase service life other 10 years). Service life for the older A/C was 20 years + life extension

The runway length values from previous post are MTOW (Ilyushin official data), the A/C can take-off on 1000 m unpaved runways with limited weight.

THE LANDING GEAR CONFIGURATION:
Heavy duty hydraulically retractable tricycle type, reinforced for unpaved operation. The steerable nose has two pairs of wheels, side by side. The main gear on each side has two units in tandem, each unit with four wheels on single axle. The main gear size is 1.30 x 0.48 m (low-pressure tires) and the nose size is 1.10 x 0.33 m. The nose wheels retract forward and the main units retract inward (into two ventral fairings under fuselage), with additional fairing on each side of the lower fuselage. During retraction, the main wheel axles rotate around leg, so wheels stow with axles in parallel to fuselage axis (wheels remain vertical at 90° to direction of flight). The landing hear has oleo-pneumatic shock-absorbers. The tire pressure can be adjusted in flight from 2.5 to 5.0 bars (36 to 73 lb/sq in) for different runways conditions. Main wheels has heavy duty hydraulic brakes.

I have to say that A/C operates on Africa’s worst unpaved runways: must see to believe the huge dust cloud that beast produce.
