Lockheed C-130 Hercules

The Lockheed C-130 Hercules is a four-engine turboprop aircraft that serves as the main tactical airlifter for military forces worldwide. Capable of landing and taking off from short or unprepared runways, it was designed as a troop transport and cargo aircraft, but is now also used for a wide variety of other roles, including airborne assault, weather reconnaissance, aerial refuelling, aerial firefighting and MEDEVAC. More than 40 different models of the Hercules - including several gunships - are used by more than 50 nations.

The C-130 family has the longest continuous production run of any military aircraft in history. During more than 50 years of service, the family has established a solid record of reliability and durability, participating in military, civilian and humanitarian aid operations.

I flew C130E's out of Pope AFB in the triple seven Sqd from 1966 thru 1969 all over the world including Vietnam and accumulated 2200 hours and loved every hour of flying this bird as a Loadmaster. I then went to work for Delta Airlines and worked the L100 the civilian version of the C130.

What an airplane!! Was is the 31st ARRS at Clark from 1970-72. Had H /N /P models...Spent two years at Langley in 29 TAS crewing an E model...what a great and dependable airplane...may have been the greatest DOD investment...EVER!

I cut my teeth with the 50TAS in the 80's flying as flight engineer on the E's, then moved on to the C-130A with the 758TAS. We picked up new H's from the factory in 1987, and I can't forget the smell of fresh leather! I'm still flyin' em now, but my fondest memories are the A model. Totally uncomplicated by todays standards, it was unique in that it was rare, even in those days. No SCNS, SKE, GPS, NVG, whatever. But I'm still not sure what a carbon-pile regulator was...

I'm doing some research for a book. Does anyone know the shortest runway a C133 can land /take-off from? Say half loaded.

My Uncle Major Robert M. Killam (Retired) flew a spooky gunship some 13,000 hours. It had to be a cool ride for him to spend that much time at it. I'm pretty sure he has flow it WAY outside the spec. envelopes. Don't know that but would HIGHLY suspect it. I've see pictures of it that look like a beer can shot with a shot gun, engines on fire. Got him and his crew home. He speaks very highly of it.

I flew the E, the B, the H-1, and the H-2 over 27 years. I flew them in Vietnam, in Europe on Rotation (Rotes to Frankfurt and Mildenhall), in Central and South America. I then flew them for another 20 years in the Texas ANG, including Panama Rotes and in Desert Shield /Desert Storm. and in Bosnia. Although I flew with Delta Air Lines, amassing a total of 29,000 hours, the time with the Herk was my fondest memories. The only thing better than the Herk were the men and women crewmembers I flew with.

I served with the RAAF 22 (City of Sydney) Sqn. for about twelve years through the Vietnam era at Richmond air base (NSW, Australia) at Air Movements.
There were still a couple of 'A' models in service when I started there. I fell in love with these aircraft from the very first.
I was lucky enough to get a couple of trips in the Hercs as well as the Caribous. The time at Richmond working among the C130s was one of the best in my life.
I recall a movie we were shown once showing Hercs (USAF) landing and taking off from aircraft carriers and also doing aerial acrobatics, with the aircraft being snapped around in all directions as if it were a light aircraft.

I accumulated over 15,000 flight hours in the USAF and USMC, most of which was as a Radio Operator /Loadmaster . The last model which I flew in was the USMC KC130T. I retired from the Marines, as a Master Gunnery Sergeant, in 1998 after 34 years of service, and owe my life to the Hercules, many times thru the years. I loved that airplane.

Flew in A models out of the Phillipines in 1960-62. to SE Asia when I was in 1st Mobile Comm Gp. It was a much better ride than the C-124; much faster and a much smoother ride. The big problem was how cold the cargo deck was at altitude. We would crawl on top of radio vans or sit in sleeping bags to keep warm. Short field take-offs and landing were a gas. The B and later models were much warmer rides. Still riding in them when I retired in 1989.

Flew the "H" from '76 to '81 at Dyess, 774TAS, and the "E" from '86 to '88 at Clark, 374TAW /21TAS. Only logged about 2,500 hours in the plane, but went to some great places--Khamis Mushayt and Iwo Jima, for instance. (Sigh!) Ah, the memories.
