Continuing its highly successful Corsair biplane range, Vought produced in 1930 the new O3U-1 for the US Navy. This led to several new O3U observation and SU scouting types being produced, powered by Pratt & Whitney Wasp or Hornet radial engines in the 410-447kW range. All remained two-seaters, armed with one forward-firing 7.62mm and two rear-mounted machine-guns. Altogether nearly 330 were built, two-thirds as O3Us.
