Classic design, amazing that a 'cheap-ish' throwaway supersonic fighter could've had such an impact. 11,000+ built, truly outstanding.

Nikos J. Farsaris, 08.01.2009 01:51

To my last comment...
The R-25 engine with "boosted afterburner"is fitted to newer or reconstruted samples especially for interceptors.
With this engine Mig-21bis models have a thrust to weight ratio over 100% at an altitude over 4000 meters that makes them (fitted with modern radars and missiles ) very capable interceptors against even 4th generation jets

Mikoyan and Gurevitch got the prize! (Any prize)
As my serbian and romanian friends told its a 60's fighter that still outfights much newer F-16s. Actually it was that fighter that provoced the evolytion to F-16 - as a simple high performance single engine all weather fighter. As far as I know it is still the backbone of many Aairforces as Romania and Yugoslavia even as a successor to successor (outliving Mig-23 and sometimes Mig-29)

As regards Ian'question...

The best Jet ever. Not just widely produced & use but also has potential to be upgrade into 4++ Gen combat aircraft.

MiG-21-97, Bison & Lancer has proven to be at par with 4 & 4++ Gen combat aircraft.

MiG 21 ?!... Great fighter !. It came into service some 48 years!!! ago ( 1960, Soviet Union ). It was the main jet fighter for some 15 years, with Soviet Air Force and some 20 other countries. That's something. And it is still in service in Europe ( Romania, Croatia, Slovakia), Africa Central America (Cuba)and Asia.
That's a record for sure !!!!!

A squadron mate of mine got one shot at one of these in VN. But his Sidewinder didn't a barrel roll around the MIG and it resulted in not kill. Our squadron had a very successful time with the MIG in VN. We five kills and our sister F8 squadron got three or four more. The F8 was the leading MIG Killer in Vietnam during the early days. The MIG-21 was a threat that filled your hands with stick and throttle in the air over VN.
