In late 1960 viktor balenko is defected to us via japan an he unveil the mig 25 design and believe it or not ,the mig 25 is developed to F-15 so we can see both of the aircraft is smiliar, but F-15 is upgrade avionics and stealthier but only low observable.

Love the plane! And yes it's quick, but don't these units have trouble with over-reving at speeds over Mach 2.5?
Apparently the engine operates like a "Ram-Jet" like the
one that the Israelis clocked at Mach 3.23 in 73". That plane landed and the engines were burned up and replaced from reports of the incident. Any more comments,
knowledge, and corrections are welcome! I can hardley believe that you can buy one as previous comments have indicated!......

@Peter John, Ahmet Alegoz: I know. This thing was & still is quite an achievement. Cold War-era Soviet (and American) hardware fascinate me.

a.casais, e-mail, 03.11.2010 21:24

I do not if you remember that movie with Clint Eastwood called "firefox" or "foxbat" for the real plane althought in the movie was more futurist.Hollywood play his game, crying the american because they do not have that type a machine.

The financial impact of Belenko's flight to Japan
was enormous. The Soviet Ministry of Defense abonded the construction of two aircraft carriers in favor of fully replacing the system of IFF, (target-identification)
on all Soviet aircraft, ships and missile systems.
Soviets spent over 22 billion dollars to that end.

Bob Lawler, e-mail, 12.04.2010 17:25

The MIG-25 that landed in Japan did not have an emergency. That was Victor Belenko defecting. His aircraft was extensively examined before being turned back over to the Soviets. The incident did not almost start WW III. Belenko was a very valuable source of intel for the U.S.

Jacob Lee, e-mail, 05.03.2010 13:15

How much do you want for it?

Gary, e-mail, 11.01.2010 00:29

This plane was supposed to counter all the overflights we were having fun doing over Russia with the SR-71 Black Bird recon bird. I heard the same story from many of our pilots of those birds that no MIG-25 driver got anywhere even close to sniff the exhaust of one, let alone pose any threat to them. QED
So much for the superior Russkie technology theory. We won, they lost, now they're having a fire sale on them and everything else they built that could fly.

I can supply Russian demilitarized Mig-25 for sale to civil buyers. Contact me for more information.

Nikos J. Farsaris, 08.01.2009 02:35

"The MiG-25 was capable of high performance, including a maximum speed of Mach 3.2 and a ceiling of 90,000 ft (27,000 m), although on Aug. 31, 1977, an E-266M, a specially modified MiG-25R, flown by MiG OKB Chief Test Pilot Alexander Fedotov, set the recognized absolute altitude record for a jet aircraft under its own power, reaching 123,523.62 ft (37,650 m) at Podmoskovnoye, USSR in a brief zoom climb."

Fedotov's record is still holding. No surface-based craft has ever got higher on its own power.

3.2 Mach X 1063Km/(hr Mach) = 3400 Km/hr The unarmed dash speed of the reconnasaice models. (Verified by Jewish radars at '73 crisis)...

The interceptor models could fly as fast as 2.8 Mach (~3000 Km/hr) service ceiling being 27000 Km armed with 4 R-40R/T missiles - 2400Kgrs load on wings. Weapon system was one of the heaviest fitted to an interceptor ever (Mig-31 only out performs it and F-14 was a rougly equivallent.)

Now only a few samples fly as laboratory examples or ... cosmonaut trainers (Mig-25-U with a student cocpit in place of radar) Nowadays Mig-31 is the "new Mig-25" with its performance and much more sophisticated weaponry.

Ahmet Alegoz, e-mail, 07.01.2009 14:26

37.000 meters ceiling?!!! I can't believe this! It's unbelieveble! I love you Mig-25...

Mario Salvador Junior, e-mail, 03.12.2008 08:52

This plane is superb! I remember when one Mig-25 had to do an emergency landing on the Japanese base of Hakkodate in the 80's. It almost started the third world war. Now that the cold war is over,if you have enough cash, you can fly on a Mig-25.

Sgt.kar98, 11.06.2008 05:31

There´s a scary image of a MiG-25 in the Earth stratosphere.
