I was station at McGuire AFB 1963-1967 assigned to the 1613THoms MATS. This command changed MAC and was changed
438th 0MS. We were newly formed in OCT.1963 and did a number of jobs for the 1611TH Wing. We did not receive
our first C-130 aircraft until the end of Oct.I was assigned to one of the Maintenance docks, and performed 100 hourly post flight inspections and 400 hour post flight inspections. This is a wonderful tactical aircraft.

Rick Dombrowski, e-mail, 26.03.2015 10:48

I was attached to Navy Squadron VR-3 which was based at McGuire AFB, Wrightstown, N.J. We were the last Navy Squadron to work under the Air Force prior to our decommissioning in July, 1967. I Served as Flight Mech, Flight Engineer and Instructor Flight Engineer on the 'E' models which were brand new at the time. Went thru Sewart AFB near Nashville for initial qualification and the entire squadron worked 7 days a week to earn the Combat Qualification as the first C-130 Mats Squadron to earn airdrop certification. My former flying quals in the Navy had me working a 'crew concept' whereby the same crewmen flew together all the time; which was quite a bit different to the 'airline concept' which had different crewmen fly the mission based on their qualifications. No complaints on my part as I enjoyed almost every minute of my flight exposure throughout the AirForce System. In fact, I even flew with an Air Force Crew of a squadron based at McGuire that was short-handed at the time. My time served was between March 1963 and July 1967, with the majority of long distance flights to Nam and back. We all shed a tear when the order came down to disband but it was a wonderful experience and good memories to cherish.

The C-130 has been a "cash cow" and process driver for Lockheed for 60 years, thereby providing the financial base to design, develop and deploy their high-tech military aircraft. This is covered in chapter 2 of my new book.

I was the Flight Engineer on the C-130 that Paul Kline mentioned in El Centro ca. in 1963. Yes we were trying to get to 45,000 ft but could only get to 43,500. The plane was just hanging on the props just above stall speed. The other pilot was capt. Ricky Davidson. I was in the 50th TCS.

I was a parachute rigger for the 1st Special Forces Group at Sikiran, Okonawa, Japan. I packed for and jumped with the HALO group in 1967-68. Most of the jumps were from 12,500' on to Ie Shima. I remember one of the pilots, as he was from Connecticut, and I was from Massachusetts. His name was Ed Sleeper, and he always landed and stopped on the first half of the runway, and the took on the other half. Jumping from the tailgate was a lot of fun, and the island was lovely from 12 grand.

Rick Dombrowski, e-mail, 11.10.2011 03:18

I flew the C-130E for AirForce out of McGuire AFB, NJ from 1963 to late summer of 1967. Being a former recip. mech the power of the Herc really impressed me. As am FE & IFE, I initially flew missions to Europe, Africa and West Asia; then at least one, if not two, missions to Nam per month for the better part of three years. Even squeezed in a Resupply to NORD (Danish Weather Station in Upper Greenland)to boot. Have nothing but fond memories of the Herc's durability and stamina. The C-130 series stands as a fitting tribute to Lockheed Aircraft Co.

Took Space-A flights out of Dyess AFB, TX to Pope AFB, NC and NAS Oceana, VA to go visit the in-laws back in the 1981-1983 time frame. My first wife, an AMMO type, asked the flight crew if we could do a tactical lift-off. The pilot flatly refused due to pax (passengers) being onboard. Oh well, she tried!

I flew on the a modle that flew top secret missions out of Germany from 1958 to 1962.I loved the airplane,it had so much power.I guess that is why they extended the fuselauge. There is a history of the recon c-130 that was shot down over Armenia in 1958 in FORT MEADE MD.Our squadron lost 17 crew members. Everyone in the squadron were volunteers. There is a webb site for the squadron(7406supportsquadron.com)check it out...A GREAT SQUADRON.....

I am retired U S Air Force and spent twelve and a half years as a crew chief on first the C130A and lastly on C130H. I have flown to Berlin Templehoff airport, Anchorage Alaska and Bogata Columbia as well as other plazces in the U S A aboard a C130. The aircraft holds a special in my heart.

Charles B Kashala, e-mail, 17.04.2011 17:32

Im an african from the war torn region of central africa.
i have experienced the divers abilities and fonctions of this aircraft.
Reliability, efficiency under extreme conditions on the tropical conditions:heavy rain, wind etc...
what took my breath away is the ability to land and take off in our school football (+or- 95 meters length uneven grass terrain) field to deliver food aid.
i will never forget that day at our school.
i always dream to become one day either pilot or mechanic of this aircraft to help others of my region.

Alan Anderson, e-mail, 06.04.2011 03:35

I can't verify this is true, but I understand that the high altitude record jump was supposed to be from 45,000 feet but the 43,500 was as high as they could get.

looking for c130 H -30 or L100. total of 4 aircraft 1984 or later please up date on email.many thanks

I was a maintenace mechanic on a C130 that hauled high altitude paratroopers to a worlds record height of 43,500 ft. in 1963 in El Centro, Calif. I was responsible for the oxygen and pressurazation systems and high altitude oxygen console on the plane. This was know as Project Halo or Tac-Test 63-18. I was stationed at Sewart AFB at Smyrna, Tn. with the 314th.FMS at this time. You can search for Jumping in The Troposphere and read about this mission on the internet. Capt. Marvin Payne piloted this plane. Members of various branches of our sevices made the jump to set the record for high altitude jumping.

Terry McCarty, e-mail, 10.03.2011 03:54

I was a KC130F flight mech for 2 1/2 years at VMGR 252 (Cherry Point N.C.) 1966-1969) and flight engineer VMGR 152 (Fatima/Da nang) into early 1970. My crew personally flew the last US Marines (load crew and fork lift) out of Quang Tre and Dong Ha. We just left everything as is for the Cong as we with drew. NOT GOOD!!! I recorded over 3,000 hrs in the bird and enough points for 5 air medals. We refueled over Hanoi and dropped flares at night to support Helicopters and downed aircraft retraction. Loved this bird. Wanted to be a pilot but the Col. said that enough Officers wanted flight school so I was SOL. Should have stayed in the Reserves, for an other retirement and maybe my pilot wings. Stayed in the air every hop that was available. Great air plane, that protected us for every mission. Semper Fi

Served with the 2nd Aerial Port Squadron at Sewart AFB, Smyrna, TN in 1959-60 as Loadmaster on C-130 A&B models. Reserve was with Wilmington, OH and we used C-119s and 123s. Loaded the 101st Airborne from Ft.Campbell to Homestead AFB during the Cuban Crisis in 1962.

Harry Allen, e-mail, 03.03.2011 00:32

Have more than 5,000 hours in HC/WC/KC/EC/MC/C130A/B/C/E/F/H/R. Probably forgot a few. Over 1,000 combat hours. 47 typhoon penetrations. Did you know that 15 typhoon penetrations got an Ari Medal? Took 20 combat missions. I didn't figure that out until I left the WX business. Flew with the Marines for awhile. Taught at the School house at Little Rock. Deputy at the 4950th Test Wing's Modification Center at Wright Pat. Worked at the Lockheed Aircraft Service Company for 10 years after retiring from the Air Force. Ran their Special Operations Programs including the upgrading of the old AC130H to the SOFI configuration. As I recall, sometimes the airplane got me home when I didn't help it as much as I should have. Not many airplanes would have done that.

george mitchell Major, USAF re, e-mail, 23.02.2011 08:49

I flew the C-130 A,B,D from 1954 to 1971 all over the world five yrs in europe, 2yrs in vietnam , and USA. I believe this was the best aircraft built to perform a tactical airlift mission in military aviation history. No other aircraft approaches its safty , reliability, and abilty to get the job done under extremely difficult flying conditions. My hat is off to the brillant Lockheed aircraft engineers who designed an built this aircraft that has become a ledgend greater than any other including the C-47.

Those farmers in Ga. knew how to build a great plane when the C130A was invented. I worked there for awhile when they were replacing the center wing box section in the late 1960's. Not only did I get 2300 flt hours in it but also 350 hours in the c141a in the reserves. Great planes

I was in c-130a's for 5 years in photo mapping then Viet Nam. T was in 815th tac and spent 15 daye in Nam a month all as a flt.engineer. A total of 9 years out of US all on c-130, also southern air transport for 7 years.I set flying records in Angola, worked for Edi Amin in Uganda

Sgt. USMC Nam 66-67, e-mail, 29.01.2011 08:46

3rd Anti Tanks attached to 3rd Marines in ICorp area between 66/67 from Danang to Dong Ha. Mostly feet on ground but my few flights on the C130 (model?) were interesting, especially on first landing on metal plate temporary runways. Reversing engines and brakes (I suppose) gives you really funny feeling in your gut and stopping 3 feet from end of runway. A real work horse as I remember.

My first squadron out of A School, Millington, Tn. was VMGR-352, at El Toro. Spent a 13 month tour with VMGR-152 at Iwakuni, and managed to do a lot of traveling in that bird. Regret that I was never aboard a C-130 when they did a JATO demonstration - sure looks impressive. Got assigned to A-4's after Iwakuni.

Although I never had the privilege to fly or crew on the C-130, but I do have many fond memories of taking off with them and flying in them but never landing with them! I was with the 82d ABN DIV (1971-1974) and we had many jumps from that workhorse of an aircraft. The jumps out the side doors were pretty good, as long as the blast doors were deployed. If they weren't deployed your jump could get pretty interesting if you didn't make a concerted effort to throw yourself out the door. If you didn't give a big push off from the door you would just slap the side of the fuselage with your body on the way out, understandably knocking the wind out you most times. All in all a great plane though!

Ashyia AB, Japan...First C-130 to the Far East (1958). I was trained as a Flight Engineer by the Lockeed flght crew that delivered the A/C (transitioning from the C-119). As Wing Standboard Engineer, I was privilaged to take any flight I wanted to where ever. I have momentos of "first C-130" all over the Far East (as it was called then).

I was privileged to work on, crew, and then fly the C-130 B & then the E. I ended up as a Flight Engineer and retired in Mar 1974. I believe the Herc was/is the best aircraft ever built. My last flight in Viet Nam, we were actually making drops in Cambodia, to a group of 'friendly forces' in a school yard. They were out of ammo & medical supplies. We went in AT 500' as a two ship formation--I was in the second ship. The first aircraft took only 3 hits. We took 11. But the Herc got us out and we made it back home. As I said, BEST BIRD EVER MADE.

My first operational aircraft out of pilot tng was the C-130D (Ski) and C-130A in the 61st TCS (Green Hornets) out of Sewart AFB TN. Great aircraft and later transitioned into the B model (The 'sports car' of C-130s) prior to transfer to Evreux AB France and back into A models. Truly a great aircraft!

We were on a mission we were told flying up and down the west German/East German border back in 1969 testing a new ground based radar they said and we flew this for 6 hours at 30,000 feet and I have pictures of the instruments at that altitude and 1000 pounds fuel on each engine burn C130E. I always believed we were put up there as bait as the Migs on the other side came up to look us over to find out why we were there at that altitude.

I had the honor of flying the mighty Herc from August of 1971 through 1979 on active and reserve status in the USAF. Stationed at Little Rock AFB, TDY to CCK in Taiwan and Saigon during the war and for 7 years out of Alvin Calendar Field in Belle Chase, LA. Great memories, great flight crews and an incredible aircraft capable of almost any mission to almost any place. Proud to be a part of its history especially for the A, B and E models which I flew. God bless you other brothers of the sky who have experienced the joy of the Herc.

I flew C130E's out of Pope AFB in the triple seven Sqd from 1966 thru 1969 all over the world including Vietnam and accumulated 2200 hours and loved every hour of flying this bird as a Loadmaster. I then went to work for Delta Airlines and worked the L100 the civilian version of the C130.

DBearden, e-mail, 04.03.2010 23:31

What an airplane!! Was is the 31st ARRS at Clark from 1970-72. Had H/N/P models...Spent two years at Langley in 29 TAS crewing an E model...what a great and dependable airplane...may have been the greatest DOD investment...EVER!

Bruce B., e-mail, 26.02.2010 06:18

I cut my teeth with the 50TAS in the 80's flying as flight engineer on the E's, then moved on to the C-130A with the 758TAS. We picked up new H's from the factory in 1987, and I can't forget the smell of fresh leather! I'm still flyin' em now, but my fondest memories are the A model. Totally uncomplicated by todays standards, it was unique in that it was rare, even in those days. No SCNS, SKE, GPS, NVG, whatever. But I'm still not sure what a carbon-pile regulator was...

Jim, e-mail, 25.02.2010 19:11

I'm doing some research for a book. Does anyone know the shortest runway a C133 can land/take-off from? Say half loaded.

charles logston, e-mail, 09.02.2010 17:54

I worked on and flew on the B/E/H for 10 years. I have 2000 flight hours as flight Eng., lots of it at 500 Ft. 2 Eng. searching over the water. It is a great aircraft.

Rob Gibson, e-mail, 03.02.2010 07:15

My Uncle Major Robert M. Killam (Retired) flew a spooky gunship some 13,000 hours. It had to be a cool ride for him to spend that much time at it. I'm pretty sure he has flow it WAY outside the spec. envelopes. Don't know that but would HIGHLY suspect it. I've see pictures of it that look like a beer can shot with a shot gun, engines on fire. Got him and his crew home. He speaks very highly of it.

Ron Hale, e-mail, 01.02.2010 07:52

I flew the E, the B, the H-1, and the H-2 over 27 years. I flew them in Vietnam, in Europe on Rotation (Rotes to Frankfurt and Mildenhall), in Central and South America. I then flew them for another 20 years in the Texas ANG, including Panama Rotes and in Desert Shield/Desert Storm. and in Bosnia. Although I flew with Delta Air Lines, amassing a total of 29,000 hours, the time with the Herk was my fondest memories. The only thing better than the Herk were the men and women crewmembers I flew with.

Frank M. Lopez, e-mail, 29.01.2010 02:51

I served with the RAAF 22 (City of Sydney) Sqn. for about twelve years through the Vietnam era at Richmond air base (NSW, Australia) at Air Movements.
There were still a couple of 'A' models in service when I started there. I fell in love with these aircraft from the very first.
I was lucky enough to get a couple of trips in the Hercs as well as the Caribous. The time at Richmond working among the C130s was one of the best in my life.
I recall a movie we were shown once showing Hercs (USAF) landing and taking off from aircraft carriers and also doing aerial acrobatics, with the aircraft being snapped around in all directions as if it were a light aircraft.

Ed Linton, e-mail, 29.01.2010 01:02

I accumulated over 15,000 flight hours in the USAF and USMC, most of which was as a Radio Operator/Loadmaster . The last model which I flew in was the USMC KC130T. I retired from the Marines, as a Master Gunnery Sergeant, in 1998 after 34 years of service, and owe my life to the Hercules, many times thru the years. I loved that airplane.

MIKE MARTIN, e-mail, 23.01.2010 01:19

FLEW HC-130'S H,N,+P'S WITH 33ARRS OUT OF KADENA ,OKINAWA.
REALLY ENJOYED THAT AIRCRAFT. YES THERE WAS A STRETCH 130. IT WAS CALLED AN L-100. WAS USED BY AN AF CONTRACT CARRIER THAT FLEW PARTS FROM HILL AFB DEPOT AROUND THE U.S.

CMS (ret.) Michael Pfender, e-mail, 20.01.2010 17:58

Flew in A models out of the Phillipines in 1960-62. to SE Asia when I was in 1st Mobile Comm Gp. It was a much better ride than the C-124; much faster and a much smoother ride. The big problem was how cold the cargo deck was at altitude. We would crawl on top of radio vans or sit in sleeping bags to keep warm. Short field take-offs and landing were a gas. The B and later models were much warmer rides. Still riding in them when I retired in 1989.

Flew the "H" from '76 to '81 at Dyess, 774TAS, and the "E" from '86 to '88 at Clark, 374TAW/21TAS. Only logged about 2,500 hours in the plane, but went to some great places--Khamis Mushayt and Iwo Jima, for instance. (Sigh!) Ah, the memories.

Yes Max Gross for peacetime was 155K but for wartime, 175. This basically means that the aircraft will easily fly at 175 but should you lose an engine during takeoff, you may not be able to recover. I have 3,000+ hrs to include USAF, Lockheed Instructor in Saudi Arabia and Bird Air (Cambodian Airlift)

I am looking for a urinal shield for c-130 pn 8838352-10.

Alan Anderson, e-mail, 09.12.2009 06:28

Have 5,000 hours in the C-130D, D-6, E and AC-130A, E, and H as a navigator, Stan-eval nav and instructer nav in the gunship school at Lockborn and Hurlburt field from 1963 to 1975. As I remember, max take off weight for the A was 127,000 and the E 155,000. Emergency wartime weight was 175,000 which was the weight of the ABCCC aircraft. The max weight was a landing gear limitation. The highest I ever was was 33,000 feet going across the Davis straits on the way to Sondrestrom Greenland. I heard that the Golden Knights tried to set an altitude recored using a 130 at 45,000 feet but could only get up to 42,000. Can't guarantee that is true.

George Hays, e-mail, 31.10.2009 06:49

I was first stationed at Okinawa in 1961 with the 815th tcs and transferred to the 817th tcs at Tachikawa early 1962 and we flew C130A models all over the Pacific. What a wonderful aircraft! I will never forget all of the hours spent with this bird. Later went to Davis Monthan where we launched jet powered drones for survalence and target practice! Spent time at Eglin where we launched for William Tell. Oregon Air National Guard won the meet in 1964. What a treat that was! I would like the hear from any one that might have been there for that!

Sam McGowan, e-mail, 30.10.2009 04:33

Started out as an aircraft mech on E-models at Pope, then cross-trained to loadmaster and logged over 4,000 hours in Es, As and Bs, in that order and mostly in Southeast Asia. A great airplane. The ceiling shown is probably about right for an airplane taking off at max gross weight and climbing straight to altitude. At lighter weights they can go a lot higher. The "new" J-models have much better high altitude performance than the older models.

Mark Kirsch, e-mail, 07.10.2009 02:42

I flew these as a USAF/ANG FE for 18 years with time in A, B E and H models...best airplane ever built. Never failed to bring me home, whether in Vietnam, the Cold War or the Gulf War.

I was stationed at Fairbanks, AK in 1955 when the C-130A prototype was brought up for cold weather testing. It spent the bulk of the wiinter there going through it's paces. Along with the C-130 that year we had the C-123, F-101 Voodo, and the F-102 Delta Dart. Since they parked them right next to the hangar I worked in I had the opportunity to see them close up. Even back then the C-130 was very impressive. So were the other three for that matter.

c-130 coolest plane ever

Lance, e-mail, 22.07.2008 08:49

The C133 was not a stretched Hercules. It was an entirely different aircraft built by Douglas

Alan Meyerson, e-mail, 12.07.2008 09:30

I grew up about 1 mile from Santa Monica airport. In the early to mid sixties I remember C-133's, a stretch version of the C-130, landing there frquently to pick up parts from Douglas Aircraft for the space missions going on at that time. Why is there no mention of that aircraft?

"DD" Brown, e-mail, 06.07.2008 00:35

Antarctica...to an LC-130, it's just another runway. USN squadron VXE-6 operated there. I made eight deployments and consider those years some of the finest in my 20 year career.

Love 2 rent this plane for a group skydive jump exp.
& for a New gunship: Install a Laser system & add a Nose & Port/Stbd side Laser nodes & the AC130L can be a LASER gunship using Pure directed energy into targets.
Laser system must be portable & hooked into planes Laser firing ports & onto Nose cone turret for 180 arc firing fwd.
Wow.
But retain the past AC130 gunships as proven support planes.
Wicked, Laser gunship.

Between February 1972 and 1973 as an aircraft commander and IP I flew more than 100 AC-130E gunship missions over South Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. The 16th Special Operations Squadron was stationed at the RTAB in Ubon, Thailand and referred to as "The Four Engine Fighters Of Wolfpack", and our call signs were "Spectre" as we flew primarily at night. Our aircraft were armed with two 20mm vulcan cannons, one 40mm cannon, and a 105mm howitzer.

Jerry Bryan, e-mail, 08.06.2008 23:43

Instructor Flight Engineer and Stan/Eval. The normal Max. gross weight is 155,000 lbs. For special missions there is a waiver to 175,000 lbs.

Dave Krone, e-mail, 08.06.2008 06:12

I flew the Herc as a civilian for Alaska International Air both domestically and overseas. We had the -30's with Allison 501-22a's, just shy of 5000 horse power. A great airpland. We also had a MTOW of 155,000 lbs, but I think this was an FAA limitation. I believe the military flew at 175,000 lbs MTOW. Also had a max cieling of 32,600 ft.

Paul Snyder, e-mail, 02.06.2008 13:57

Years of working on the Herc, The best times spent with The Strategic Air Command & the D.C. 130. Supporting the Viet-Nam operations, out of Utapao Thailand. This bird has so many missions and it does them well.

Joe Feltner, e-mail, 27.05.2008 18:51

I have flown on this aircraft for the better bart of 14 years as a Flight Engineer and also as an instructor Engineer and it is the best aircraft the air force ever bought. It will be around for a long time to come. I accumulated over 15,000 hours on the herk and love every minute of it. The 50th TAS is still the best

Jerry J. Smith, e-mail, 26.05.2008 22:15

Have about 2,000 hours in the C-130E and RAF Hercules C.MK.1 as Aircraft Commander and Instructor Pilot. With the RAF -15 engines cruised well above FL30. Great airplane. A real workhorse and fun to fly.

Sam Hunter, e-mail, 19.05.2008 20:41

Roger that on the ceiling limit. I have been above 30,000 feet in a D-6. We did some high altitude drops for the Army at Yuma Test Center.

Frank Hogarty, e-mail, 03.05.2008 21:05
