why did not H.A.L UPGRADE THE MARUT AIRCRAFT. IF it had upgraded the aircraft then itself. our country would have produced so many air crafts by now country would have saved huge foreign exchange.

HI,EVERYONE.I AM A MODELLER SINCE 15 YEARS,OVER 400 IN MY COLLECTION.CURRENTLY BUILDING ALL THE AIRCRAFTS OF THE INDIAN AIRFORCE SINCE 1936.COMPLETED 21 MODELS .CAN'T LOCATE THE HAL,HF-24 MARUT KIT,DISCONTINUED BY ALLIANCE MODELS IN RESIN OR WARRIOR MODELS IN VACFORM/METAL.CAN ANYONE HELP??

The Winged Spirit - Marut - HF24 was an exceptional aircraft once airborne. The only aircraft to fly cross country at .9M at height, It had a gentlemens cockpit when compared to the Gnat Mk1 and an unbeatable fire power. The Americans had evaluated its airframe for a Mach 2 flight but the Orpheus Mk 703 engine were under powered for the airframe & all up weight. All the same for low level flying it was superb. Had a good long innings of 8 years flying her.

We all agree that Marut could not get a proper power plant because of many politico/economic reasons. However it`s performance after having crossed 280 knots was highly noteworthy, specially during combat. Even against Mig21 it could hold more than it`s own in a stand off dogfight. It`s handling at all speeds specially at extreemly low speeds during combat and at very high speeds at lowlevel were phenomenol. The answer to all this can be best explained by some of our test pilots like groupy Kapil; sir . What I wish to ask the aeronutics types, that given the modern computer technology of 2011 can not this air frame be revived with a better engine. What was so difficult in 1980s can easily be handled now if there is proper planning and political leadership, afterall modification of old airframes is a very common undertaking amongst so many american and europian fighters .

The pursuit of the right engine was inevitable. The Orpheus was picked because as it was readily available in India as it was manufactured there under license. Later on they in fact looked at the Egyptian Bradner E300 which had been intended for the Egyptian built Helwan 300, but like that aircraft itself this came to nothing. There was talk of useing the RB199 which would have been more than suitable. However, as noted elsewhere this not unreliable aircraft has given way to the MiG 27, now that really is whole diferent can of worms!

I think the biggest problem with Marut was its frame. The frame design was not meant for the power of the engines. This resulted in cracks in the frame after some fixed number of sorties.

The HF-24 gave a good account of itself in the wars with Pakistan 85 and 71.
It was transonic but could carry a fair armament.It had no relation to the Mig-19 or the Shenyang, as it was designed by a team at HAL led by the legendary Dr.Kurt Tank, designer of the FW 190, one of the deadliest Luftwaffe fighters in WW2. Unfortunately the potential of the airframe (Mach2) was not matched by the puny Orpheus engines.

Marut was the first jet aircraft made by India. It did not succeed as it had many flaws..The aircraft engine was taken from Ajit(Gnat)..Two of Gnat's engine were put in Marut. The aircraft was too bulky and the was underpowered.

The project that led to the Marut was headed by the legendary German designer Dr. Kurt Tank who is also known as the person behind the Focke Wulf Fw190. The Marut however was not a particularly successful aircraft and was soon replaced by the Russian MiG-27 as the choice strike fighter for the Indian Air Force.

este avion fue diseñado originalmente en la Fabrica militar de aviones, FMA de cordoba (argentina) por el ingeniero aleman kurt tank, originalmente pulqui III. cuando el gobierno del general Peron (1955) fue derrocado, kurt tank emigro a india donde reactivo el proyecto.
