Harold Bolas designed the Puffin to meet a requirement for a fighter reconnaissance biplane which could operate equally well flying from land or water. Three were built the first flying from the M.A.E.E. at the Isle of Grain on 19th November 1920. Suffering from being tail heavy, a problem that it was never completely to get over, various mods were made and whilst a good deal of improvement was achieved also the fact that the R.A.F. was strapped for cash meant no order would be forthcoming. All three ended their days at the Isle of Grain.
