The Springbok was developed with information gained in the building of the earlier (1920) Silver Streak. Air Ministry Specification 19/21 called for a Bristol Fighter replacement and Shorts submitted the Springbok. The first Springbok I flew on 19th April 1923 and from the two of these models the S3a Springbok II was developed flying for the first time 25th March 1925.

"Now is this the Springbok or is this th Chamois?"

for all intents and purposes they were the same airplane. Unlike most airplanes of that era the Springbok/Chamois was built out of aluminum and had a stressed-skin monocoque fuselage. The RAF was interested in it mainly to test it's advanced construction methods, but there was no chance that they would order it in quantity because the airframe was considered too advanced to be easily maintained by the squadron personnel of the time.

being a writer and working on a series for a magazine I am getting to grips with the early flying days, and realise that the navy really did push ahead with development. Am I right in asking the Short production faciliy was in kent, with the river medway handy for experiments. signed J.N.
