The CL III had a 160 HP Mercedes D III engine; the CL IIIa (like the former CL II) had the 180 HP Argus engine.

Designed by Hermann Dorner, the CL III replaced the earlier CL II and was unusual in that it had a biplane tail which was not generally found on smaller aircraft such as this. However, the tail offered a better field of fire to the observer. Some 617 were produced from 1916 onwards .

The picture definitely shows an in-line ,rather than radial engine.

This picture is of the CLIIIa mistakenly credited to Cpt. Eddie Rickenbacker I believe.

Not sure about the engine description. I believe it was an in line engine of either 160 or 180 hp. This picture is of the CLIIIa mistakenly credited to Cpt. Eddie Rickenbacker I believe.

Interesting picture, looks like it could have used some more horizontal stabilizer surface.
