Designed and built as a replacement for the AN 24, the first flight was made on 29th March 1990. As the Soviet Union was going through it's death throws and there were technical problems especially with the Klimov TV7-117S engines the second prototype did not fly 24th December 1991. Production was slated for Tashkent in Uzbekistan, with that country becoming independent of the Soviet yolk the Russians withdrew funding and the OKB continued to fund production independently. The second prototype crashed on 5th July 1993 killing seven of the nine people on board precipitating the withdrawal of funding. Only 20 airframes were produced some going to the now defunct Vyborg Airlines and ten being supplied to Uzbekistan Airways. The production was terminated in January 2014 since when there has been talk of repatriating the production to Russia where a revised design with a truncated fuselage and a maritime patrol aircraft have been mooted.

What a bunch of morons. Find out about the number of passenger airliner crashes that cannot be attributed to pilot error, incorrect/poor maintenance, or hostile fire. Only then can you objectively talk about the safety record of a manufacturer.

@luson

Well, the west is the home to free speech, so yes, we are intimately aware of the many many crashes of Boeing aircraft including the HUNDREDS of Boeing aircraft that um... 'crashed' over Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan between 1942 and 1945. Sorry but we do know about those things. Funny enough, it's the same company which builds more aircraft than any other. You would probably argue that is only a coincidence.

Boeing remains the aircraft that has recorded more crashes in history of aviation but you would not know it from reading the media as handled by the west would you

Russians are possessed of a technology that stands out amongst the others for their creativity and advanced designs. However, the Russians have not yet come to terms with the rest of the world like China has in marketing and selling their technology and in adopting effective strategies to sell their product.

The Illushyn aircraft and the YAK are two superior passenger and cargo conveyancers in their respective classes which have underachieved because of the problems alluded to above.

If the Russians would eat a bit of humble pie, the honest about their disadvantages and shortcomings and engaged Japanese marketers as consultants, it would likely be a totally different scenario altogether and the world would have greater competition in this field.

Boeing remains the aircraft that has recorded more crashes in history of aviation but you would not know it from reading the media as handled by the west would you?

He will learn one day that you can't get away with false identification. Do not use other peoples email. Because you leave end up leaving your information.
