This airplane was designed by Bushi Cheng. It is an origination Chinese design which has a common layout same as the Yak-18A, however every thing else it different. Construction, airfoil, all medal wing, flap, gear, etc. Only thing in common is the air system, instrument panel, and engine cowl design (since they used the same engine that is expected). Bushi Cheng designed the a/c system almost identical to CJ-5 at instructors request for easy follow on for them. The airfoil is the same as the T-34 not because he copied but because the airfoil fit the performance factors he was looking for. "Design follows function." I've owned a CJ-6a for over 17 years. I have thousand of hours in one and have Yaks, and other comparable trainers. It is by far the best handling for it performance class. Very forgiving and gives plenty of warning near stall. Will do ANY acrobatic maneuver except tail slides. A great airplane designed by a great designer.

It's a really great airplane. It's very easy to fly and performs well. Many that have been imported to the US have had the Chinese engines replaced with a Vedeneyev M14. That adds some horsepower and gives better performa nce in the desert area (high density altitude)of the US.

CJ-5 and CJ-6A are not similar in any aspect, other than they each have a rotary engine, albeit different in rotation and number of cylinders. CJ-5 is identical to a Russian Yak 18 in all respects other than packarding (as far as I can tell.)
