This aircraft should never have lost its 'X' factor and remained experimental. Its design is severely flawed and will never amount to anything as its too expensive. 2016 is looking like a remote chance, unless they redesign everything its going to be 20never

This aircraft is not going to be in service until 2016

I believe there are three version a land a carrier version and the STOL version.

I have read that the U.S. Navy is rejecting this aircraft for carrier operations because it lacks an effective tail hook. What does a VTOL aircraft need with a tail hook? Madness!
I have also read that the Marines don't like it because if it takes off from a paved surface the jet blast will blast the super-expensive stealth coating off the bottom of the aircraft. More madness!
Surely The people who design aircraft such as this one must live in a bubble, completely outside the realm of reality!

There's no reason to pay more than £20 million for any fighter, what can they all do apart from have speed and range, perhaps payload. The F-15 Eagle is probably still the best all-round aircraft (I know it's expensive now, but not as much as these) Yes, the V/TOL VTOL is impressive but what's the real point of any costly aircraft when you can only have less than 200 of them (Take the Raptor), or maybe just 20, 30, 40, 50 if you're lucky.

At around $160 million a copy, this plane represents a defense establishment run amok. Can we really afford this madness? And for defending against what, or whom? Naturally, Lockheed is already pushing for a replacement for the F-35, likely to cost us $250 million a copy.

There is a lot of problems and delays as well as the inevitable cost escalation. And it looks like they need the GE engine as a back-up if GE can make turbines to handle the high operating temperatures. And does it use the same RAM coating as the F-22?
