This is the way I wrote it for the book I'm working on:

The CAMS 36 Flying boat was developed in 1921 by state order and first flew in 1922. The boat was designed for the Schneider Trophy race of 1922 in Naples, Italy. It was a single-seat racing, flying boat that was powered by an eight-cylinder Hispano-Suiza 8fb 360 hp engine allowing it to develop a speed of 245 kmh (155 mph). The race was held in August 1922 and was supposed to have two CAMS 36 entries, but a lack of funding forced the French to withdraw.
The following year at the, race, a modified version of the plane (CAMS 36bis) was entered, however, at the beginning of the event, the aircraft was damaged and had to abandon the competition.
