The boat was designed for the Schneider Trophy race of 1922 in Naples, Italy. It was a single-seat racing, flying boat that was powered by an eight-cylinder Hispano-Suiza 8fb 360 hp engine allowing it to develop a speed of 245 kmh (155 mph). The race was held in August 1922 and was supposed to have two CAMS 36 entries, but a lack of funding forced the French to withdraw. The following year at the, race, a modified version of the plane (CAMS 36bis) was entered, however, at the beginning of the event, the aircraft was damaged and had to abandon the competition.
