This aircraft was designed in 1915 and first flown in early 1916. They were used operationally through 1917. A few may have still been in service as late as early in 1918. They were not popular aircraft. The two gunners enjoyed good fields of fire, but the pilot's view was not good. Many of these aircraft were lost in landing accidents. The tricycle landing gear, which looks ahead of it's time, was really only intended to prevent nosing over during landing, and probably caused more accidents than it prevented.

The SM-1 was a three-seat reconnaissance and observation plane. It was unusual in being powered by a single Salmson radial engine that was mounted in the middle of the fuselage, driving two tractor propellers through a complex set of gears. Over 150 were built and they were used operationally over the front lines. However, they were never popular, and were replaced by the more conventional Salmson 2.
