The Baby Grand was probably built in 1909-10 by the Wrights to thier attempt to capture a speed title. Air meets where becaming very popular and profitable after Rheims. The Wright Model "R", probably standing for "Roadster" was a smaller version of the Model B with a 4-cylinder, 30 HP engine and capable of speeds greater than 50 mph. The Wright Racer also known as the "Baby Grand" was powered by a Wright 8-cylinder, 60 HP engine and capable of speeds in excess of 65 mph. In 1910 the speed record was around 60 mph. Walter Brookins was scheduled to fly the Baby Grand, was in the process of taking off when he rolled over a trench or a hole which damaged the aircraft beyond repair, not really a crash.
