I'm trying think of the advantages of a transverse rotor configuration over a tandem rotor and can't think of any. Maybe they wanted to move the engines away from the fuselage to reduce noise, but the text indicates that this was primarily a cargo aircraft. This configuration takes up more hangar space, adds drag and weight, plus there's the engineering challenge of making the lifting surfaces separate from the fuselage. Why on earth did they choose this configuration?
