We also loaded the CAT 300DB articulated trucks into the MIL26 for transport to Moro. I enjoyed my time working with the Russian crew on the project.

Will Billon, e-mail, 20.08.2007 05:51 I was in charge of all aircraft for Chevron Overseas developing an oilfield in the mountains of New Guinea from 1989 to 1996. We had three Boeing Vertols, an occaisonal Chinook and two Russian Kamovs along with one Mil 26. Counting all the Hughes 500s and Bells, we had about 27 helicopters operating at one time. We used the large helicopters to move the three drilling rigs throughout the rainforest. The Mil 26 is a great machine and we used it primarily to haul bulldozers and other heavy wheeled trucks to a site to build a runway for three Hercs ( Southern Air Transport) that hauled all of our infrastructure for the project from Lae, on the coast. The three hercs flew 15 flights a day for Two years. I flew in the copilot's seat of the Mil using the cyclic (heaven forbid not touching the collective!!) and it was very quiet and the cockpit reminded me of the Herc in size. We had a tail rotor strike on it when offloading some heavy material out the back and the nose lifted causing the huge tail rotor to hit the limestone runway and disentergrate.It was pilot error since he was supposed to transfer fuel forward to compensate. No one was hurt but we had to get another transmission (as big as a Volkswagen) , tail rotor gearbox and drive shaft from Russia which took several months. This was more precautionary since the whole system was stressed to some degree. This was a great machine!!!!!!!
