Scheutzow B

Webb Scheutzow designed a small two-seat helicopter with a patented low-cost 'Flexihub' rotor head which relied on rubber mountings for the two main rotor blades and required no lubrication. The Scheutzow B was a side-by-side two seat helicopter with the classic layout of an enclosed fibreglass cabin, an engine in the centre section, tubular open frame rear boom and a fixed skid undercarriage. The prototype, N564A, flew on 26 January 1967, followed by three further examples, but the type failed to gain a Type Certificate and development was abandoned in the early 1970s.

Any interest in an internet reunion? Perhaps, the online chat could be prefaced by statements from Jan Scheutzow and Elmer Scheutzow addressing the question, "What happened?"

I also know this heicopter was Type Certified in Chicago Region and is listed in the FAA website regulatory guidance library. I worked at the company from 1967 sweeping floors, to designer in 1968 and rotor blade bond development into the 70's. Web gave me a wonder wealth of experiences and was truly an innovative spirit. I am glad I was able to thank him for all the mentorship he provided me as a young engineer.

As his son, I can assure that the Bee was indeed Type Certified, and as far we know, was the only private individual in the US up to 1976 to type certify his own helicopter.

I also worked on this helicopter in the early 1970's. I left before it was TC'd but I am aware it did gain a TC. I have been an FAA licensed Airframe & Powerplant mechanic since 1964. We also had an employee named Julius Finley who was an A /C welder.

This helicopter was certified. The TCDS is H1GL, date may 4, 1976. I worked on the project from 1969 to certification in 1976
