Managed the factory at Speke, Liverpool, established under the British Government's 1936 scheme to create "shadow" factories to augment the productive capacity of the aviation industry. This scheme brought the British motor car industry, which had some experience of quantity production, to aid the aircraft builders. Rootes' factory at Speke built Bristol Blenheim I and IV aircraft, and Beaufighters VIF and X came from their Blythe Bridge, Staffordshire, factory.
