Bradt

Before leaving Saaremaa, take a short detour to Maasi to see the remains of the fortress, and also to enjoy the sea view across to Muhu. The fortress was blown up in 1576 by the Danes in an attempt to forestall the Swedish invasion and nothing was done for the next 300 years. In 2000, serious excavation started and by 2004 electricity had been installed so it is no longer necessary to take a torch to explore the vaults.
