The definitive "31", the 231 was used extensively by the Czechoslovakian Air Force until the German invasion of 1939. Some were used by the German controlled Slovak Air Force between 1939 and 1945. Twenty Four were purchased by the Spanish Republican Air Force. Their service record is unknown but three survived and were taken over by the Nationalist Spanish Government.

The Czechoslovak Air Force used 25 Š-231 from the summer of 1936 for only half a year; then they were sold through Estonia to republican Spain.
