Developed as a fast scout at a time when such a concept was still not fully established, the 511 flew for the first time in 1913. It was entered into the Aerial Derby race around London in May 1914, but this was postponed due to bad weather, however it was re-entered in the June by which time it had been developed into the Avro 514.
