Latécoère initially developed the Laté 4 as a bomber, the Laté 4 Bn.4. However the company realised that the growing transportation field was a more profitable source, and so the design was converted to carry 10 passengers.despite the change of use, the aircraft still had the appearance of a bomber aircraft. The first example was powered by a single engine Salmson 18CM engine, producing 550 hp, and two Salmson 9Z engines, rated at 260 hp. The first flight of the prototype aircraft took place in 1919. Two years later, a second aircraft was built with three Renault 12Ja engines with a capacity of 450 hp each.
